Where the Creek meets the Craft: Village Creek Brewing debuts

     Village Creek Brewing Company hosted their 3rd soft opening this weekend. They’re located in Rendon in southeast Tarrant county. Art Anderson and family have been working towards opening for a few years and are almost ready to be open full time.  They featured 9 house beers on tap and 4 hard seltzers. They also serve wine that’s made locally as well. He’s currently brewing one a 1 barrel system but is looking to upgrade his system in the near future.     On a rainy Saturday, there was a good crowd there enjoying live music, playoff hockey and NBA on the TVs and a food truck offering food including a crawfish boil. They plan to have a few more soft openings before finally opening full time sometime in June. Stay tuned to their Facebook page to see updates on more soft openings and their grand opening.

Breweries of the Plains/Panhandle

I visited the Plains/Panhandle region of Texas last week and visited some breweries in the area. I wanted to provide an updated list of breweries and happenings. 

Wichita Falls 

Wichita Falls Brewing - opened in 2018 in downtown serving over 20 in house beers. Progressive Pizza is housed inside the brewery and features Detroit style and round tavern style pizza. 

Cisco 

Fat Ass off the Ranch - Fredericksburg’s Fat Ass Winery purchased the former Red Gap Brewing in May of last year. While there are still some Red Gap beers on tap, they now feature wine and wine cocktails from the Fat Ass brand.

Abilene

Primal Brewing - Carl Price opened Primal in 2018 in Baird just outside of Abilene before later moving to Brownwood. In 2023, the operation moved back to Abilene and has been there since.  His pickle beer is a local favorite. 

Grain Theory - Located upstairs in downtown Abilene, Grain Theory opened in 2021 and quickly became a downtown destination.  Their back room features a self-pour tap system that is tracked through a credit/debit card. They feature a full kitchen and have plans on opening a second taproom in south Abilene sometime in late 2026. 

Grain Theory - Abilene, TX

Sunnhaus Brewing  - Sunnhaus opened in 2021 and is woman and veteran owned in Potosi, just south of Abilene. They specialize in Farmhouse-style and small batch beers. No kitchen on site but they often host food trucks. 

Midland/Odessa 

Tall City Brewing - Midland - Opened in late 2019 and features a large brewhouse with an inviting taproom with garage style windows and has access to the patio and a rotating food truck.

The Waystone -  Midland - This board game room and brewery opened in April of 2023 and features 7-8 house beers on tap. If you go, check their hours as they are only open Wednesday through Sunday. 

Felipe’s Bar and Grill (Far Out Brewing) - Odessa - Felipe’s opened in May of 2025  after “Frisky’s” shut down at that location previously. It’s a huge multi level building with lots of space for the brewhouse and kitchen. 

*Coming soon* - Homemade Wines of Odessa recently received their brewing license and will be brewing soon. 

Lubbock 

Triple J Chophouse & Brewery - Opened in 2006 as a chophouse that also brews their own beer. Their dinner rolls are “made with brew house grain”.  It’s easy to find something good for dinner as well as a good beer. 

Brewery LBK - Located in the Pioneer building downtown, LBK opened in 2018 and was named “Number 1 brewpub in America” by USA Today in 2021. 

Two Docs Brewing - In a former downtown warehouse, Two docs opened in 2019. The “Buddy Hoppy” IPA is named after Buddy Holly who was born in Lubbock. 

Mano Negra Brewing - Officially opened in 2021 in Cactus Alley in Lubbock, they closed in 2024 and moved to downtown in August 2025.   Small operation brewery founded by Daniel Badillo. 

Good Line Beer Company - Good Line opened in the summer of 2022 and has become a staple in Lubbock. They won 2025 “Brewery of the Year” from the Texas Craft Brewers Guild in the “under 620 bbl” category.  And rightfully so in my opinion. It’s hard to find an empty chair inside and all of their beers are solid. They recently opened a second location in nearby Wolfforth next to Evie May’s bbq. They claim to be the brewery of the “Dust Coast”. 

 Good Line Beer Co. - Lubbock, TX

Amarillo 

Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery - Big Texan opened as a restaurant in 1960 but didn’t start brewing until 2010.  They have around 10 staple beers on tap with a couple of seasonal rotating taps. They now have an RV Park on site, cabins, and wagons that are available for overnight stays. 

Six Car Pub & Brewery - Six Car opened in the summer of 2018 in downtown Amarillo. It was established in an effort to revitalize the downtown area. They have their own beers and American fare and are known for their rooftop patio. 

Pondaseta Brewing Company - Also opened in 2018, Pondaseta is named after the first road south of nearby Canyon, where the owners are from. Speaking of Canyon, Pondaseta just opened a second location in downtown Canyon just 20 miles south of Amarillo. Pondaseta’s Patek Pils won silver in last year’s Texas Craft Brewers Guild competition.

Old Tascosa Brewing Company - Matt Welch and his wife opened Old Tascosa in May 2024 on the historic Route 66 in downtown Amarillo.  Last year with help from a grant through the city, they got a new retro sign to help advertise the brewery.

Pouring fresh beer in Glen Rose

Glen Rose Brewing Company opened their doors publicly for the first time today. I took a trip down there to check things out. They started construction about a year ago and built the building from the ground up and their ownership group purchased a 2 barrel system last year. Brewer Patrick Locke has been home brewing since 1995 and has honed in his recipes. Boasting 10 taps, they plan to have 10 beers/seltzers on tap at all times.  Glen Rose has dinosaur tracks in the Paluxy River nearby and they have leaned into that dinosaur theme.  Their logo features a hop flower with dinosaur track in the middle of it.  Their beer names are also a reflection of the dinosaur theme with names like “Raptorweizen” and “Tricerahops”.  I really enjoyed the flavorful Pecan Porter.  There is a restaurant next door with a play area for kids in between.  This will be a great spot for locals and visitors alike.  I got to meet many of the friendly investors and staff and all of them were welcoming and you can feel the excitement for this new venture.  Thanks to Beau and Patrick and everyone for their hospitality today. If you’re down in the Glen Rose area, this brewery is well worth a visit.

70 breweries in 2024

I travel a lot for work and leisure and enjoy visiting different breweries when I travel. This year I was able to visit 70 breweries. While 31 were breweries I hadn’t been to before, 39 were repeat visits.  I was able to visit 5 states outside of Texas as well as the Cayman Islands. Sadly, 5 of the breweries that I visited this year are no longer in business.  I have posted all of the breweries I visited this year at the end of this blog. Here are some of my most memorable experiences. 

Favorite New Mexico brewery

Ex-Novo Brewing Company - Corrales, NM

Located in the quaint “ranch style” town of Corrales just north of Albuquerque, Ex-Novo (meaning “from scratch”

in latin) has a modest taproom with a brewhouse just across the parking lot.  Their “Drink Beer, Do Good” culture has resulted in them donating almost $150k to their surrounding communities. With 2 original locations in Portland and Beaverton, Oregon, those have since been sold. They have this location in Corrales and a recently opened new location in Albuquerque with high quality dining being a focus. I enjoyed the Corrales location and my favorite beer was their “Mass Ascension” IPA. This IPA is named after the famous Albuquerque hot air balloon festival.

Favorite Colorado brewery

Ska Brewing - Durango, CO

Ska has been a staple of Durango since 1995.  They claim to have their brewery be wind powered and their name derives from the “ska” and “rude boy” culture. In 2020, they opened a brewstillery in Boulder and in April of this year, Telluride Brewing announced that they had moved 83% of their production to Ska. It’s a huge facility that brews over 21,000 barrels annually. My favorite beer was their “Modus Hoperandi” IPA

Favorite Arkansas brewery

Moody Brews - Little Rock, AR

This small operation located in the Pettaway square of Little Rock opened in March of this year. While not offering flights, they do offer 5 ounce, 13 ounce and 16 ounce pours. Their back patio faces a square with other retail partners including a coffee shop, a burger food truck and a bookstore. Their “Earl Grey ESB” brewed with Earl Grey tea was full of flavor and easily one of the top 5 beers that I had in 2024.

Favorite new DFW brewery

Union Bear Brewing - Denton, TX

Although Union Bear has their original location in Plano, the Denton location opened in July of this year in the old Armadillo Ale Works location.  The tan leather stools and green marble bar gives this spot a much different look than its predecessor. I really enjoyed their “Grown Up Chicken tenders” and their “brussels slaw” made me want to make a return trip soon. My favorite beer was their “New Zealand Pilsner”

Favorite Austin brewery

Draught House Pub and Brewery - Austin, TX

Draught House opened in 1995 making them the oldest brewery in Austin. It’s got that German-style draft house feel to it with brass taps and the dark wood decor inside. They have a food kitchen and an outside biergarten too.  My favorite beer was their “Trophy Bitter” English Pale Ale.

Favorite San Antonio brewery

Idle Beer Hall and Brewery - San Antonio, TX

Located in the River North area of San Antonio, Idle opened in October of 2023 in an old Cadillac showroom building. This 15,000 square foot building features 2 bars, a large patio and a 10 barrel brewery. A sign that reads “Cultivating Your Confidence” hangs from the rafters and pays homage to the building’s dealership roots. Their beer names also reflect the building’s history with names like “Fleetwood”, “Tailfin”, “Hop Rod” and “El Dorado”.  My favorite beer was their “Classic Cruiser” kolsch.

Favorite Hill country brewery

Acopon Brewing - Dripping Springs, TX

Nestled in downtown Dripping Springs, Acopon specializes in English ales and taps fresh cask beers every week. Although English ales are their thing, it’s not all they do. You can find everything from a west-coast IPA to a Russian imperial stout on tap when you go. Their “Mircalla” ESB was another one of my top 5 beers of 2024.

Favorite South Texas brewery

Nueces Brewing - Corpus Christi, TX

Located in downtown Corpus Christi, Nueces is housed in an old car dealership building that has transitioned into a large tap room featuring a full kitchen with barbecue being their focus. They have 11 total taps with some flagships and seasonal beers as well. My favorite beer was this “Saint Nicholas Wonder Worker” greek pilsener.

Cayman Islands Brewery Ltd - Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Cayman Islands Brewery or “CIB” was launched in 2007 and features 9 beer taps with 3 core beers and some seasonal beers as well.  “CayBrew” lager is their flagship beer and is marketed as the “National beer of the Cayman Islands”.  CIB is plastic free and has seen some brewery expansions in recent years. My favorite beer was their “White Tip” golden lager.  This beer is named after the white tip shark and with each case purchase, a portion goes towards its conservation.

Paris Brewing opens in downtown Paris

    Nestled across the street from the Lamar County courthouse, Paris Brewing company opened up on Thursday September 12th in downtown Paris, Texas. A great lunch crowd was supporting their new hometown spot when I went on Thursday. Currently they feature 5 in house brewed beers as well as a few guest taps.  I enjoyed their “GoldTimer” Texas lager as well as one of their delicious pizzas.  They are currently brewing on a 5 barrel system.  The staff was friendly and I met the owners who were welcoming too. Many north Texans are visiting the Broken Bow area in Oklahoma for vacation and this would be a great spot to visit on your way there.

Bosque River Taphouse brewing in Stephenville

      

      I got to visit with the staff at Bosque River Taphouse in Stephenville recently. They opened December 1st and have been serving up craft beers to locals and visitors since. Will Tubbs (formerly of Revolver) is head of brewing operations and is brewing up quality craft beers.  They’re currently in a temporary location but will be moving into a permanent brick and mortar taphouse on the other side of town. Their new location will be opening approximately in spring of 2025.  They will have their staples that they will continue to brew but also have rotating taps. Will comes with lots of experience from the production, brewing and sales side from Revolver. They produce a variety of styles and want to produce beers that are popular within their local community.  Currently they are brewing on a 36 barrel system. Their best seller is their “Firewheel” American light lager. My favorite beer they had was the “Floral and Green” dry-hopped blonde ale.  They are brewing a seltzer now and will have some IPAs on tap this weekend. 16 ounce cans are available to go as they have a canning machine there on site. Just outside the brewery they have 2 food trucks, a Birria taco food truck and a BBQ food truck.  If you’re ever in Stephenville, go check out Bosque River Taphouse.

Headed to Choctaw or Winstar? Breweries on the way

    Legalized gambling may soon be coming to Texas in the next few years. Until then, Texans have to travel to either Oklahoma or Louisiana to fill their gambling void. Whether you’re going up 35 to Winstar or up 75 to Choctaw, here are a few breweries that you could hit up on the way that you might not have known about.  

Krootz Brewing Company - Gainesville, TX

Chad Sykora opened Krootz in 2018 in downtown Gainesville. They brew traditional and experimental ales and lagers and also have a full scratch kitchen. They offer burgers, sandwiches and full entrees too. Their chicken fried steak is well-liked by the locals. With beer names like “Lake Trash” and “Badass Rockin”, Krootz would be a fun place to stop on your way up to Winstar on I-35.  https://www.krootzbrewingcompany.com/ 

Cellarman’s Pub & Brewery - Sherman, TX

Most everyone is familiar with the great beers (and food) that 903 Brewers puts out, but you may not know that there’s another brewery in Sherman. Cellarman’s has the English-style pub feel both inside and outside. They opened in 1998 but didn’t pour their first house brewed beer until 2018. They serve the typical pub fare like wings, pizzas, burgers and sandwiches but their fish and chips is their #1 seller as it is battered in their cream ale.  Don’t overlook their old fashioned root beer float brewed with their own house made root beer. Say When Brewing - Denison, TX

 Say When opened their taproom in late 2022 in historic downtown Denison. They feature about 9 taps with some experimental rotators too. I enjoyed their “Texas Penny Copper” amber ale and the “Local Motive IPA”. They offer pizzas, pastas and subs that are worthy of your appetite. https://www.saywhenbrewing.com/

Lost Street Brewing - Durant, OK

When you need a break from the black jack tables and slot machines at Choctaw, Lost Street is about a 10 minute drive northeast in downtown Durant.  Lost Street boasts 15 taps and their own root beer so you should be able to find something likeable with that many taps. They recently opened a kitchen on site that features chips and salsa, tacos and taco fries. Can’t make it over there? 75 breweries in 2023

     As a craft beer connoisseur and a traveling sales manager, I was able to visit 75 breweries this past year. I got to visit 5 states along with some stops all over the state of Texas.  2023 also saw me visit my 500th different brewery (in Kansas of all places).  Of the 75 breweries I visited, 51 of them were breweries that I hadn’t been to before.  I’ll post the list of all breweries I visited at the end of this blog. Here’s some of my most notable and favorite places I visited this year. 

Favorite Kansas brewery

Central Standard Brewery - Wichita, KS

   Opened in 2015, Central Standard features a warehouse style taproom.   They brew all styles of beer from Belgians, IPAs, Barrel-Aged, Sours, and Brett/Wild beers. This was my 500th different brewery! Favorite beer was their “CSB Vienna Lager”. 

Favorite Oklahoma brewery

Stonecloud Taproom & Patio - Stillwater, OK

   Stonecloud boasts 2 locations with the other being in Oklahoma City. This location in Stillwater features 27 beers on tap as well as 3,000 square feet of indoor space and 6,000 square feet of patio space. They brew a wide variety of styles and have plenty of cans to go as well. My favorite beer was Astropup - Session IPA.

Favorite New Mexico brewery

Downshift Brewing (Hidden Tap) - Ruidoso, NM

   Nestled in cozy downtown Ruidoso, Downshift focuses on ales and lagers while also having rotational beers on tap. They have pizzas made from scratch as well as other pub fare.  This location is their home base but they have 3 other locations with one down  the street that overlooks the river Rio Ruidoso, one in nearby Alto, NM and another in old town Albuquerque. My favorite beer was “Helles” helles lager. 

Favorite Nashville brewery 

Southern Grist Brewing Company (East Nashville)

   Southern Grist’s main location is closer to downtown that features a 9,900 square foot production facility and taproom. This location on the east side seats 49 people with an ample patio space when weather permits. Their mantra is “brewing out-of-the-box flavors and styles of craft beer”. Beer and Brewing named their Gin- aged “Perpetual Composition” one of their top 20 beers of 2023. Don’t overlook their excellent food either. My favorite beer was “Money Moves” milk stout with peanut butter powder and maple syrup

Favorite Hill Country brewery (Texas)

Vista Brewing - Driftwood, TX

     Located between Wimberley and Dripping Springs, Vista sits on a 21 acre farm that has ranch views and acres of beer garden.  The massive trees and great views really accentuate the beauty of the Texas hill country. With a full kitchen featuring salads, sandwiches, burgers and tacos; the most intriguing menu item is their wildflower caramels made with their black pilsener. Vista has a second location in San Antonio. My favorite beer was their Rain Dance IPA.

Favorite new DFW brewery

Armor Brewing Co - Allen, TX

    This brewery in Allen opened in November and used to be Nine Band Brewing previously. The outside and inside looks totally different.  Jenn Todryk from HGTV fame and her husband Mike had a vision for this place and it’s beautiful inside. They brew a variety of beers but my favorite was their “No Joy” Vermont style IPA. 

Favorite West Texas brewery

Three Missions Brewing - Socorro, TX

    Located about 20 minutes southeast of El Paso, Three Missions is close to the Socorro Mission (one of the three historical and oldest missions in the United States). Its stucco walls, natural wood structural supports and tile floors give it that unique style that matches the history of the area. Favorite beer was their “5 C’s IPA”. 

Favorite High Plains brewery

Good Line Beer Co - Lubbock, TX

   In the Tech Terrace area of Lubbock, Good Line opened up in 2022. You’ve heard of “East coast” and “West coast” styles, but Good Line created their own line of beers which are brewed for Lubbock called “Dust coast”. They brew all kinds of beers and want to be a place for everyone. They even have juice boxes for kids and a dog-friendly patio. My favorite beer was the “Floating In Space” Hazy pale ale

Voodoo Brewing Company opens in Grand Prairie

     This past weekend, Voodoo Brewing Company opened a franchise brewery in Grand Prairie across the street from IKEA. None of their beer is brewed here in Grand Prairie. It is brewed at their corporate location in Meadville, Pennsylvania and shipped to this location. They do have 6 flagship beers and many other rotators. They had 23 beers on tap when I was there, as well as a cooler full of cans to go. They do have a variety of different beers available. IPAs, a Belgian Tripel, a stout, ales, lagers and sours are on tap currently.  The decor is modern rustic with epoxy sealed pallets as bar tops as well as barrels with round tabletops.

      Their kitchen is currently open and serving all different kinds of food. Their American fare includes beer cheese macaroni, wings, pizzas, sandwiches and burgers. They also offer “beer mussels” in 1 pound and 3 pound quantities. It will be interesting to see how this brewery fares against other beers that are brewed here locally. If you’re in this neck of the woods this place would be worth checking out.
